What Your Journey Looks Like

Every patient's path is different — but here is what you can generally expect when you come to us

Step 1 — Your First Appointment We will review your referral, imaging, and any biopsy results. Dr Popadich will examine you, explain her findings clearly, and answer every question you have. This is your time — there is no rush.

Step 2 — Further Investigations (if needed) You may need additional imaging (mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI) or a biopsy to confirm your diagnosis. Lisa, our Breast Care Nurse, will help coordinate these and explain what each one involves.

Step 3 — Your Treatment Plan Dr Popadich will explain the recommended treatment options and what each involves. You will never be rushed into a decision. Second opinions are always supported.

Step 4 — Multidisciplinary Team Review All breast cancer cases are discussed at Wellington's Breast Multidisciplinary Meeting, attended by breast surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, and radiation specialists. This means your treatment plan reflects the collective expertise of the entire breast care team.

Step 5 — Surgery Your operation will be performed at Boulcott Hospital in Lower Hutt. Lisa will prepare you beforehand, and the team will be with you every step of the way.

Step 6 — Recovery & Follow-up After surgery, Lisa will be your first point of contact for any concerns. Dr Popadich will see you for follow-up appointments to review your pathology results and discuss any further treatment such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy and make appropriate referrals.

Step 7 — Ongoing Support Our care does not end when treatment finishes. We are here for your ongoing monitoring, any new concerns, and your long-term breast health.

A Team Approach to Your Care

At My Breast Care Centre, you are never cared for by just one person. All breast cancer cases are reviewed at Wellington's Breast Multidisciplinary Meeting — a regular gathering of the region's leading breast health specialists.

This meeting includes:

  • Breast surgeons

  • Breast radiologists

  • Medical oncologists (chemotherapy specialists)

  • Radiation oncologists (radiotherapy specialists)

  • Breast pathologists

  • Breast care nurses

This means your treatment plan is not just one surgeon's opinion — it is the consensus of a full specialist team, reviewed against the latest evidence, and tailored to you.

You Are Not Alone

A breast cancer diagnosis affects not just you, but everyone who loves you. Emotional support is not a luxury — it is an essential part of your care.

Lisa, our Breast Care Nurse Specialist, is here to support you and your whānau throughout your entire journey. She is available to answer questions, help you understand what is ahead, and connect you with additional support services when needed.
